Spring Sports Update, Part 2

Softball

In last week’s TSLMail, we noted that the softball team had a very important series against the Florida State Seminoles, who were right behind the Hokies in the ACC standings. Virginia Tech won two out of three games against FSU and distanced themselves in the standings. This weekend there is another important series, and the Hokies have a chance to move up in the ACC standings.

Tech sits 10-7 in ACC play and 34-14 overall. They will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in a 3-game series over the weekend. Georgia Tech is slightly ahead of the Hokies in the ACC standings, in third place, at 11-7 and 42-16. The teams will face off in a double header on Saturday and will also play one game Sunday. This will be Virginia Tech’s last ACC series before the ACC Softball Championship begins on May 11 in Chapel Hill. The Hokies will also play a double header against Liberty on May 4.

Besides the big series win against Florida State, the Hokies also defeated UNC-Greensboro two times during the week, including a 2-0 victory that saw sophomore standout Angela Tincher record her fourth no-hitter of the season.

After struggling the majority of the season, the baseball team didn’t show much improvement in their weekend series with Duke. The Hokies managed to take the first game 8-4, and had a chance to bring themselves out of the ACC Coastal Division cellar. The second game of the series was televised, and VT got taken out of the game early, eventually losing 15-1. Tech went on to drop the last game of the series 10-9.

Virginia Tech has nine more ACC games remaining. They play Clemson, NC State and Virginia three times apiece. All three are quality teams, and unless the Hokies pull some major upsets, they don’t stand much of a chance of finishing higher than last place in the Coastal Division. Tech is currently three games behind Duke. The ACC Tournament begins on May 24.

The women’s track and field team finished fifth in the ACC Championships last weekend, while the men came home in seventh place. The men are also still ranked in the top 10 in the latest Trackwire 25, coming in at ninth.

For the men’s team, senior pole vaulter Brian Mondschein won the ACC Championship after vaulting 5.4 meters. Billy Berlin also had a solid performance, finishing fourth in the 1,500 meters.

For the women’s team, Saskia Triesscheijn finished second in the javelin, earning All-ACC honors. She also finished in seventh place in the high jump. Patrice Potts, a freshman, finished second in the 100 meters and eighth in the 200 meters.

The Hokies will participate in several more meets before the NCAA Regionals. Tech will travel to Penn, Stanford, Liberty and Georgia Tech before heading to the NCAA Regionals on May 26. The NCAA Championships begin June 7.

After two seasons in the ACC, the women’s lacrosse team is still without a conference victory. On Thursday they fell 12-7 to UNC in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Baltimore. With women's lacrosse possibly the most talented and most competitive of any sport in the ACC, it will be extremely difficult for Virginia Tech to make headway.

In other lacrosse news, Lindsay Pieper was named All-ACC by the conference coaches on Thursday. The junior midfielder had 46 goals and 54 points for the Hokies this season. She has 85 goals for her career, which ranks eighth on Tech’s all-time list. She was one of 19 players named to the all-ACC team.

The Virginia Tech golf team recently finished fourth at the ACC Golf Championship at New London, North Carolina. The Hokies shot an 872 in the three-round tournament. Virginia and Boston College finished behind Tech in the championship, and Georgia Tech and North Carolina finished tied for first place.

Junior Ryan Sypniewski, from Radford, VA, finished the championship with a one-under-par total of 215. He finished in 24th place individually in the championship.

The ACC Golf Championship concludes Tech’s season. The Hokies will return all but two golfers next season.

The men’s tennis team was eliminated in the second round of the ACC Tournament by the Duke Blue Devils. The Hokies defeated Georgia Tech in the first round of the tournament. With the season-ending loss to Duke, Tech finishes 12-14 overall and 3-8 in the ACC. VT had just one senior on its team this year, so next season should be a strong one for the Hokies.
