The 2006 ACC Softball Tournament kicked off in Chapel Hill on Thursday, and things didn’t go as smoothly as the Hokies would have liked. Last year Tech pulled several upsets en route to an appearance in the championship game, and later earned a bid to the NCAA tournament. This year it was Virginia Tech that got upset in the early stages. In the first game of the tournament, the #3 seed Hokies were upset by #6 seed UVA. Virginia Tech recorded just one hit during the contest, but managed to get players on base nonetheless. Unfortunately they couldn’t take advantage, stranding nine base runners. Tech's Angela Tincher gave up three runs on two hits, but she hit four batters and walked four more. Fortunately for Tech, the ACC Softball Tournament is double elimination, so they got another chance. The Hokies went into the losers’ bracket after losing to UVA and on Thursday night played Maryland, who had lost to UNC earlier in the day. This time the Hokies prevailed, winning 1-0 as Tincher tossed her ninth shutout of the season. In the two games Thursday, Tincher gave up a total of four hits and struck out 27 in 14 innings. Maryland is now eliminated from the ACC Tournament. After playing two games on Thursday, the Hokies will get most of the day off on Friday. Tech will not play until 8 pm, when they will face off against the loser of the game between #1 seed NC State and #5 seed Florida State. The Wolfpack and Seminoles will play at 3 pm, so the Hokies will have an advantage in terms of rest and preparation. Whatever happens in tonight’s game, or in the remainder of the tournament, you can’t overlook the job that Scot Thomas has done with the softball team since Virginia Tech joined the ACC. After struggling in the regular season last year, the Hokies nearly won the ACC Tournament and gained a postseason berth. This year Tech finished third in the conference and hopes to lock up a second consecutive postseason bid over the weekend.
Despite having such a good finish in ACC play this year, the team is still very young. The Hokies' starting lineup consisted of as many as five freshmen and three sophomores in 2006. Tech’s star player, pitcher Angela Tincher, is only a sophomore. Three Virginia Tech freshmen, Charisse Mariconda, Beth Walker and Jessica Everhart, were named second team All-ACC on Wednesday. Freshman catcher Kelsy Rokey, who drove in the game-winning run against Maryland on Thursday night, started 23 games for Tech this year. The talent level of the program is improving, and the team will only get better with more experience. Tincher is already one of the most dominant players in Virginia Tech and ACC history. Tincher, who is just a sophomore, broke the Virginia Tech and ACC record for strikeouts in a season. After Thursday’s games, she currently has 471 strikeouts on the year. She has a career record of 46-16 with a 0.91 ERA. On Wednesday she was named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Pitcher of the Year, the first time in conference history that the same player has taken home both honors. She was also named one of ten finalists for ASA USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Tincher is one of just two sophomores among the ten finalists. Everyone else on the list is either a senior or a junior. Tincher has many notable accomplishments in her career. Let’s take a look at some of her career highlights, in no particular order: In Virginia Tech’s first-ever ACC softball game, Tincher dominated the Maryland Terrapins, tossing a no-hitter. She struck out 16 batters in the process. On February 23, 2005, Tincher pitched nine innings of shutout baseball against Radford, pitching a no-hitter in the process. She struck out 22 batters in the game, which is the fifth-highest total in NCAA history. Tincher missed three weeks with a stress fracture in her left fibula during her freshman season, but returned for the ACC tournament. She went 4-1 during the tournament, leading the Hokies to the championship game. She struck out 21 batters in 12.2 innings against Florida State in the opening round. She set ACC Tournament records for innings pitched (39), total strikeouts (62) and strikeouts in a seven inning game (16 vs. UVA). Tincher also threw a no-hitter in Tech’s ACC opener against Virginia in 2006. She struck out 18 batters in the process. With her career not quite
halfway finished, there will be many more highlights to come.

One
of the top quarterbacks in the country has narrowed his list to
five schools. Hampton's Tyrod Taylor, a 6-1 1/2, 200-pound
standout signal caller, has released the names of his five schools
and plans on making a decision before the start of his senior
season. So which schools made the cut?
The
class of 1987 was Frank Beamer's first recruiting class at
Virginia Tech. It was his first opportunity to make an impact on
Virginia Tech football, and for the most part he was pretty
successful with his first recruiting class. The Hokies only signed
17 players that year because of the coaching staff changeover, but
they made up for the lack of quantity with quality.
Boasting
over 30 official scholarship offers, Hertford County (Ahoskie,
N.C.) defensive tackle recruit Tydreke Powell has established
himself as one of the top prospects in the East if not the
country. The 6-3, 285-pound prospect discusses his recruitment
including which schools, if any, he knows will be in contention
for his signature for a long time.
On
Thursday afternoon the Virginia Tech Athletics Department
announced that they have entered into a two-game football series
with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Hokies will travel to Lincoln
in 2008, and Nebraska will play in Blacksburg in 2009.
It’s
been a big week for Virginia Tech sophomore softball player Angela
Tincher. She has been named one of 10 finalists for ASA USA
Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, and she was also named ACC
Player of the Year and ACC Pitcher of the Year in a banquet on
Wednesday night.
The
Virginia Tech football team received some much needed good news on
Tuesday evening. For the past month the coaching staff, trainers
and doctors have been worried that tailback Elan Lewis' career
would have to wait another year to get started because of a torn
ACL. In somewhat surprising news, head trainer Mike Goforth
announced yesterday that Lewis' knee was not as significantly
damaged as originally thought, and that he should be ready to play
by the time practice begins in August.
With
Virginia Tech's recruiting objectives defined and the May
evaluation period in process, VT's recruiting target board is
taking shape. By June, the initial list of players that the Hokie
coaches will pursue at each position should be completely set. We
take an early look at figuring out Virginia Tech's major
recruiting targets. First up: the offense, led by quarterback
prospect (and possible five-star recruit) Tyrod Taylor out of
Hampton.
As
always, the Boo Williams squad was one of the most talented teams
in the Southern Invitational field and, although they fell to
eventual champ Chicago Jaguars in the semifinals, they promise to
be a force in the AAU tourneys to come. Virginia Tech is targeting
a handful of recruits from the Boo Williams team, including a top
guard and several power forwards. 2007 commitment Augustus
Gilchrist played in the event as well.
