Hokies Stout in September

by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

The Hokies are pretty good in September. I'm willing to bet that many people reading this week's TSLMail could not tell me the last time Tech lost a game in September, before the NC State game in 2004. And no, the USC game in 2004 doesn't count. It was in August.

I'll give you a hint. Nobody reading this had ever heard of Michael Vick. That's how far back it goes. In fact, a pocket passer who couldn't run was the starting quarterback, and no, I'm not talking about Grant Noel. Jim Druckenmiller was the starter in 1996, and that's the last time the Hokies lost a September game until 2004. Tech got blown out by Syracuse in the Carrier Dome back in 1996.

Virginia Tech in September Under Frank Beamer
Year Wins Losses Ties
1987 0 3 0
1988 1 3 0
1989 2 1 1
1990 2 3 0
1991 0 3 0
1992 2 2 0
1993 3 1 0
1994 4 0 0
1995 2 2 0
1996 3 1 0
1997 3 0 0
1998 4 0 0
1999 3 0 0
2000 4 0 0
2001 4 0 0
2002 4 0 0
2003 3 0 0
2004 2 1 0
2005 4 0 0
Totals 50 20 1

Tech hasn't had a very difficult September slate during this streak, but they have knocked off teams such as Syracuse, Clemson, Miami, Boston College, LSU, Marshall, Texas A&M, NC State and Georgia Tech during that stretch as well. So from 1997-2005, the Hokies are 31-1 in the month of September.

If the Hokies are to accomplish their goals and win the ACC Coastal Division in 2006, history must repeat itself. Tech plays two games they should definitely win – Northeastern and Duke. They should beat Cincinnati, but I'm not going to say they definitely will. I sat in the rain and watched the 16-0 loss to the Bearcats back in September of 1995.

But the two challenges of the month of September figure to be North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Georgia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hokies blew out both of those teams in 2005, but things change, and 2006 will be a very different year with different matchups and challenges.

A new Virginia Tech starting quarterback will be making his first start against a real team (Northeastern not being counted as a “real team”), on the road, in hostile territory. In fact, he will be getting his first meaningful game action in his career. Marcus Vick started his first career game against NC State last season, but he was a year older, and he got a lot of experience in some key games in 2003, including the win over Miami.

The Hokies beat Georgia Tech 51-7 last year, but this year they must face a team that loves to blitz and put pressure on the quarterback with a green offensive line and an inexperienced quarterback. Despite the blowout last season, don't expect the same this year, because the Yellow Jackets match up well with the Hokies.

That being said, the Hokies have beaten a lot of teams in September over the years that matched up well with them, including NC State last year, as well as LSU and Texas A&M. Because of history, and the fact that Tech will still be a good team this year despite the player losses after 2005, don't be surprised if they are again undefeated at the end of September.

But at the same time, don't take it for granted that the Hokies will be in the national championship hunt after the first five games, as they generally are. A couple of obstacles stand in the way.

2006 ACC Football Season Preview: All-ACC Offense and Defense

August 24, 2006
Even after having 51 players selected in the 2006 NFL Draft, including 12 in the first round, the ACC will have a lot of talented players in 2006. So many, in fact, that it's very hard to decide on an All-ACC team. No matter how many lists you see, you can always make a case for a number of players who deserved to be included. That being said, TSL still decided to take a stab at it.

Mosley Considering Three Offers
August 24, 2006
Henrico (Richmond, VA) only returns seven starters from last year's squad that went 6-4, but it is returning some pretty important players. One of the key returnees is senior standout Corey Mosley, a 5-9, 192-pound safety/running back for the Warriors. A Richmond Times-Dispatch second-team all-metro selection last season as a junior, Mosley, who combines very good speed and overall athleticism, has picked up three scholarship offers and is drawing interest from a number of other top programs.

He easily has double-digit offers and is in the process of setting official visits. Right now, there are two programs he knows he will officially visit. Where does Tech figure into the mix?

2006 ACC Football Season Preview: Unit Rankings
August 23, 2006
Last year the ACC was known as a dominant defensive conference. There were a number of highly ranked defensive teams in the league last year, and on many occasions they made the ACC offenses look bad. Despite losing a lot of players to the NFL in the offseason, the conference should still be loaded on defense this year. And there will be many offensive playmakers as well.

August 22, 2006
Hargrave Military Academy head coach Robert Prunty is excited about the talents of Ladi Ajiboye, a standout 4-star defensive tackle who signed with Virginia Tech in February of this year. Prunty says Ajiboye is a “Sam Adams-type” player and expect a big contribution from him this season.

Hokies Host 4-Star Guard
August 21, 2006
Tech's men's basketball program has been on a bit of a roll as of late, landing quality prospects for the 2007 and 2008 classes, respectively. Coach Seth Greenberg is hoping to keep the momentum going and he appears to have made a good impression on Dorenzo Hudson, a 6-4, 185-pound guard who is rated a 4-star prospect by Scout.com.

2006 Recruiting Analysis: Scouting Report -- Defensive Recruits
August 21, 2006
While the recruiting on offense came up short for a number of positions -- specifically running back, offensive line, and tight end -- the needs on the defensive side of the ball were almost completely met. The only shortcoming on defense was possibly at the Whip Linebacker spot, but several recruits have the potential to be moved to this position. In this second of a series of recruiting articles, I continue to break down this class in more detail and provide a scouting report and prediction for success for the defensive recruits.

Practice Report: Starting Defense Dominant
August 20, 2006
Once again, TSL has a practice report from Saturday's scrimmage. As usual there were some head turners, head scratchers, as well as great defensive play. But there were a couple of standouts on the offensive side of the ball as well.

2006 ACC Football Season Preview: Virginia Tech
August 18, 2006
The Hokies should have another good team in 2006, but at this point no one is exactly sure how good. The defense should be stellar, as usual, but the offense has major holes at some very important positions. Tech also brought in four new assistant coaches in the offseason, so things are looking a lot different around the Merryman Center.
