Tech Sports News | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The NACDA released their latest update of the 2007-08 Directors' Cup standings, and Virginia Tech is looking stronger this year than last year. The Hokies have benefited from joining the ACC in their overall sports programs, and the Directors' Cup is a good indication of this improvement. The Directors' Cup is given each year to the school that is most successful in all sports. Points are awarded based on the finishes of each school in each measured sport. It's not a perfect system. Sports like fencing and men's and women's ice hockey are included, and very few schools actually field varsity teams in those sports. However, it's a good indication of an athletic department's overall competitiveness. This is Virginia Tech's fourth season in the ACC. Here is a table that shows Tech's results since 1993-94, and as you can see, things have gotten progressively better since joining the ACC.
Here is a look at how the ACC as a whole is faring right now.
Virginia Tech has made a strong push up the standings so far this year. They have almost as many points so far this year (323.5) as they did in all of 2004-05 (331.5). In the most recent scoring period, the Hokies scored points for men's and women's swimming, as well as men's and women's indoor track & field. The Hokies will stand a good chance to add to their point total in the spring. The softball team stands a great chance to make the postseason again, and the track & field teams will compete in the outdoor portions of their schedule. The golf team will also have a chance to earn points. Last year they tied Georgia Tech for the ACC Championship. The baseball team is also competing right now, but they are one of just two ACC teams with a losing overall record. Women's lacrosse has two games remaining and then the ACC tournament, but they have yet to win an ACC match this season. Virginia Tech didn't score any points in wresting, men's basketball or women's basketball in the most recent round of scoring. Other sports that were scored this round, but the Hokies do not compete in, were fencing, women's ice hockey, rifle and skiing. Right now, Virginia Tech is easily ahead of the other two expansion schools, Boston College and Miami. The Eagles and 'Canes are in the bottom third of the league, and don't stand much of a chance of catching the Hokies. Tech only finished 10th in the ACC last year, but Boston College finished 11th and Miami 12th, and both were well behind the Hokies in points. 2008 Spring Game Tailgate Plans The annual TechSideline.com Spring Game Tailgate returns for another year, packed with more food, fun and excitement than ever! This year's tailgate will be co-hosted by The Colosseum of Blacksburg, A Luxury Sports Condominium and Hotel, and proud sponsor of TechSideline.com and Virginia Tech athletics. We'll have our usual pulled pork barbecue and massive pot luck tailgate, and thanks to The Colosseum, we'll have a few new wrinkles: a morning omelet bar, a hot dog bar, and even a special guest: Virginia Tech radio color analyst and "Buffet Buddy" Mike Burnop will be making an appearance. The festivities will get underway at 9:00 a.m. -- an hour earlier than past years, thanks to The Colosseum's omelet bar -- under a huge Colosseum tent near the entrance to Lot 4.
