The ACC's New Injury "Rules"
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

The annual ACC Football Kickoff began last weekend and lasted through the early part of the week. As usual, the media made their picks on the All-ACC players, and their projected conference standings. However, the event as a whole didn't get a lot of play.

One of the most interesting things to come out of the meetings hasn't even been mentioned on the TSL message boards. The ACC has adopted a standardized way of reporting injuries throughout the conference.

The ACC decided to copy the NFL's system. On Monday, season-ending injuries and upcoming surgeries will be announced by each school. On Thursday, each injured player will be categorized in an injury report. The categories are just like the NFL: Out, doubtful, questionable and probable.

The movement to handle injuries in this way was spearheaded by two head coaches from the state of North Carolina. Butch Davis of UNC, and Tom O'Brien of NC State.

"It's a good thing," O'Brien told the Raleigh News and Observer. "Anything that unifies it; some [coaches] would play with it one way or another."

In the past, teams could handle their injury report as they saw fit. They could release all information, they could release no information, or they could go somewhere in between.

However, it remains to be seen how many teams will comply with the new rule, and how much. According to ACC Associate Commissioner Mike Finn, it is not an official policy.

"It's a guideline, not a policy," Finn Said. "We're trying to create a minimum standard for sharing information."

There will be no punishment for teams who leave players off of the injury report. In the NFL, if a team leaves a player off the report, that team is fined.

Preseason All-ACC

The media released their Preseason All-ACC team earlier this week, and two Virginia Tech players made the list.

2008 Preseason All-ACC
Offense Defense
Pos Name Team Pos Name Team
QB Cullen Harper Clemson DE Everette Brown FSU
RB Josh Adams Wake DE Michael Johnson GT
RB James Davis Clemson DT Ron Brace BC
WR Aaron Kelly Clemson DT Vance Walker GT
WR Hakeem Nicks UNC LB Aaron Curry Wake
TE Ryan Purvis BC LB Clint Sintim UVA
OT Andrew Gardner GT LB Brian Toal BC
OT Eugene Monroe UVA CB Victor Harris VT
OG Rodney Hudson FSU CB Alphonso Smith Wake
OG Sergio Render VT S Michael Hamlin Clemson
C Edwin Williams Maryland S Myron Rolle FSU

PK Sam Swank (Wake Forest), P Graham Gano (FSU) and returner Brandon Tate (UNC) were also named to the All-ACC team as specialists.

Here's a breakdown of how many players each team put on the list.

All-ACC Players, by School
School Players
Clemson 4
Wake Forest 4
Boston College 3
Georgia Tech 3
Florida State 3
Virginia 2
Virginia Tech 2
North Carolina 2
Maryland 1
Duke 0
Miami 0
NC State 0

Look closely at that list. Notice that Wake Forest is tied for first place with four players, and Miami is tied for last place with no players -- tied with Duke, of all teams. That's how far the 'Canes have fallen, and that's how high the Deacons have risen. It also shows what a good (and bad) coaching staff can do to a program. Miami really didn't have many good players last year, but Wake had a lot of guys we'd all like to see playing for VT, like Josh Adams, Aaron Curry, Alphonso Smith, and a few others.

The preseason favorite, Clemson, is tied for Wake at the top. Quarterback Cullen Harper, running back James Davis and wide receiver Aaron Kelly all made the list. The Tigers have quite a bit of skill position talent. The only question that remains is how well their young offensive line will perform.

July 25, 2008

2008 Hokie Football Season Preview: Linebackers
July 24, 2008
Virginia Tech lost the best inside linebacker duo in school history in Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi. Fortunately, they'll be replaced by two r-seniors who appear to be more than capable of getting the job done. Throw in returning starter Cam Martin at whip, and Tech looks like they'll have a good group of linebackers, assuming there are no injuries.

One of the more impressive performers at Virginia Tech's July senior camp has decided to commit to the Hokies. Bethel (Hampton, VA) defensive end James Gayle, who posted a 4.59 time in the 40 among other highlights at Tech's camp earlier this month, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Hokies.

July 23, 2008
With 31 scholarship offers in the fold, 6-3, 220-pound Keenan Graham is one of the most highly recruited defensive end prospects in the 2009 class. Las Vegas, Nevada, certainly is not a typical recruiting ground for Virginia Tech, but the Hokies have offered and expect to host the Silverado High School star on an official visit.

2008 ACC Football Season Preview: Clemson
July 23, 2008
We hear it every year about Clemson. "This is the year!" Just like the Miami teams of the mid-to-late 1990's, each year is supposed to be "the year" that they get over the hump. Also just like Miami, it's taking a long time for that vision to actually come true. The Tigers are viewed as the major underachiever in the ACC, year in and year out.

2008 Hokie Football Season Preview: Defensive Backs
July 22, 2008
Virginia Tech lost Brandon Flowers to the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as steady starting free safety D.J. Parker. Despite those losses, there's nothing to suggest that Virginia Tech's secondary won't be very good in 2008, as it usually is. The Hokies have two players this year that could be very high picks in the 2009 NFL Draft, as well as some younger talent to fill out the depth chart.

VT Commit Jarell Eddie a Top 2010 Player
July 22, 2008
In Jarell Eddie, Virginia Tech has scored a commitment from a 4-star prospect (as rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com) who first played on Cannon School's (Concord, N.C.) varsity boys basketball program as an 8th-grader. As an 8th-grader, Eddie, who stood 6-5 at the time, was more of a post player according to Cannon School head coach Ron Johnson. Since then, the star rising junior has almost transformed his game.
