Glennon Done? We'll See...
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com
The speculation amongst
Tech fans is that Tyrod Taylor will be Virginia Tech's primary quarterback,
sooner rather than later. That's probably true, but that certainly doesn't mean
that Glennon should get comfortable on the bench.
Last season when Taylor
was named the starting quarterback, Frank Beamer said he firmly believed that
Virginia Tech would need Sean Glennon again before the season was over. That
turned out to be true. Taylor got hurt against Duke, Glennon came back and
played very well down the stretch, and both players were heavy contributors in
Tech's ACC Championship run.
If we look back to 1997,
we'll see that the Hokies have used more than one quarterback in most seasons,
whether it's by choice or because of injury. The following table lists the
quarterbacks who have started games or have received significant playing time
(not just mop-up duty) for the Hokies since 1997.

For the most part, Tech backup quarterbacks have played because of injury. Nick
Sorensen and Dave Meyer played behind injury prone quarterbacks. Meyer was an
excellent backup who could have started for many schools, and who started a game
in 1998, 1999 and 2000 (Interesting reading: Part
1 and Part
2 of "In His Own Words: Dave Meyer," from the spring of 2001).

Grant Noel started the
first game of the 2002 season, but gave way to Bryan Randall. However, late in
the season at Miami, Randall was knocked out of the game, and Noel had to come
in on a critical goal line play. He threw a touchdown pass to Ernest Wilford.
In 2003, Marcus Vick and
Bryan Randall both played, and then the Hokies went three seasons with just one
quarterback. Last season, both Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon started games for
Tech. Taylor was hurt against Duke, and later Glennon got knocked out of the FSU
game.
There has been just one
season where two quarterbacks played, and neither was hurt at some point. Bryan
Randall began the 2003 season as the starter, and he started every game that
year. However, Marcus Vick got most of the snaps against Miami and Pittsburgh,
and both players split reps against Boston College. That year, the two
quarterback system did not go well.
Generally though, the
Hokies have had an injury at quarterback in roughly half the seasons since 1997.
History tells us that the Hokies will need their backup quarterback this year.
In fact, they'll be very fortunate to have such an experienced one. Stay ready,
Sean. You might play a major role at some point later this season.
Hokies Vs. 1-AA Teams
Virginia Tech will welcome
the 1-AA Furman Paladins into Lane Stadium tomorrow. It will be the sixth time
the Hokies have faced a 1-AA team since 1999, and the Hokies always walk away
with an easy victory.
Here's a summary of Tech's
recent history against 1-AA opponents.
Hokies
vs. 1-AA Teams |
Year |
Opponent |
Result |
1999 |
James
Madison |
47-0 |
2003 |
James
Madison |
43-0 |
2004 |
Florida
A&M |
62-0 |
2006 |
Northeastern |
38-0 |
2007 |
William
& Mary |
44-3 |
Average
Score |
46.8-0.6 |
No 1-AA team managed to
score on Virginia Tech until William & Mary snuck in a field goal in Lane
Stadium last season. The Hokies have beaten their opponents by an average of
just over 46 points per game, with the 38-0 win over Northeastern to open the
2006 season being the closest margin of victory.
Furman is one of the best
1-AA teams the Hokies have played. In their last five games against 1-A
opponents, they have lost by an average of just 10 points. With so much player
turnover for the Hokies, I'm looking for Tech's 46-point margin of victory to
come down a bit after this game, though it should still be a relatively easy
win.

Updates From the Past Week
|
To Err is Human, to Boo Repellent, to Cheer Divine
September 5, 2008
Sean
Glennon might effectively be at the end of his college career. He's going
to play against Furman, but beyond that, what can he expect? Frank Beamer
didn't pull the redshirt from Tyrod Taylor without great thought, and I
figure Beamer intends to use TT heavily for the rest of the season. This
might be the end of the line for Glennon ... and one can only hope that
it's the end of the line for the bitterness and venom that has often been
aimed his way.

Yet to Narrow List of Schools
September 5, 2008
Top
wide receiver recruit Justin Brown has had a busy week, and not
just on the field in preparing for his team's regular season opener. The
6-3, 205-pound Concord (Wilmington, DE) standout has already received
double-digit phone calls from college recruiters this week, which is the
first week Division 1A coaches may phone 2009 recruits this fall.

Football Q&A, Thursday Edition: September 4, 2008
September 4, 2008
There
will be no "Keys to the Game/Matchups to Watch" article this
week, primarily because there is little to no game film on Furman for TSL
football analyst Phil Martin to review. However, we've got a special treat
for you. Raleigh Hokie joins us in a special Q&A session to talk about
how Virginia Tech should use Tyrod Taylor, and whether or not the two
quarterback system should be a thing of the past.

Rhodes,
Varina Impress in Opener
September 4, 2008
DeAntre
Rhodes and the Varina Blue Devils turned in a fantastic performance
last Friday, soundly defeating a GW-Danville team featuring top senior

tackle/offensive guard, showed why he is also considered a top in-state
prospect in the 2009 class.

Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Furman
September 3, 2008
Virginia
Tech welcomes the Furman Paladins to Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Furman is one of the best 1-AA programs in the southeast, and they have
put a major scare into some 1-A teams over the past few years. This one
isn't likely to be nearly as much of a walkover as most 1-AA opponents
are. The Hokies will need to come to play.

Game Analysis: Fired Up Pirates Knock Out Mistake-Prone Hokies
September 2, 2008
"Reality
Check" -- a quick search of the on-line dictionary defines it as
coming to terms with what is actually happening, rather than what one
chooses to believe. The Tech football team and their fans got a big dose
of reality served to them on Saturday with a tough, heart-breaking 27-22
loss to a very good team from East Carolina.

Thoughts: East Carolina
September 1, 2008
We
had been hearing all summer that the Tech coaches were very concerned
about their opener with ECU, and on Saturday we found out why. Some of
Virginia Tech's problems against the Pirates can be traced to youth and
inexperience, but at the same time, some old demons reared their heads.
The 2008 season is off to an ominous start.

Around
the ACC: Week 1
September 1, 2008
The
ACC took one on the chin this weekend. The highly-touted Clemson Tigers
were spanked by Alabama in the Georgia Dome, and Coastal Division favorite
Virginia Tech was knocked off by East Carolina. Even North Carolina, the
preseason #2 in the Coastal, was nearly beaten by a 1-AA team. Overall, it
was a bad weekend for a conference that appears to have gotten even worse
since last season.
