Tech-UVA Rivalry a One-Sided Affair

Virginia Tech and Virginia meet in football on Saturday, and the Hokies will be looking to win their ninth game in the past ten meetings against their in-state rivals. No team has done that since the Hokies beat the Hoos 10 out of 11 times from 1953 through 1963.

Here is a quick look at the last 10 meetings of this rivalry.

The Hokies have had an easy time of it over the last 10 years. Tech is beating UVA by an average of almost two touchdowns over the last decade. If you throw out Virginia's two wins, the Hokies are beating the Hoos by an average score of 31.4 to 12.4. In other words, it hasn't been a competitive rivalry of late.

The Hokies have the lead in the rivalry with an overall record of 47-37-5. Virginia won the first eight meetings from 1895 through 1904. Since then, Tech has really dominated this series, except for a couple of short bursts by the Hoos.

In the mid-1940s and early 1950s, the Tech administration made decision to no longer emphasize athletics. In fact, the Hokies didn't even have a team in 1943 and 1944 because of World War II. After the war, Virginia and other universities were filled with tough, hardened war veterans seeking to get an education and play college football at the same time. Virginia Tech struggled to find players during this time period. The veterans didn't want to attend military school for four years after already serving in a war.

As a result, Virginia won eight out of 10 meetings from 1941 through 1952. The Hokies won the 1942 meeting, and the 1946 game was a tie. UVA won all six games from 1947 through 1952.

At that point, the rivalry started to go in opposite directions. Virginia began to de-emphasize college athletics, and they let successful head coach Art Guepe leave for Vanderbilt. In the meantime, the Hokies hired Frank Moseley, who completely turned around the VT program. Tech went 8-0-1 in 1954, and the Hokies beat the Hoos 10 out of 11 times from 1953 through 1963.

Moseley had the Hokies going in the right direction. Virginia gained an upper hand in the rivalry in the late 1980s and early 1990s when the Hokies were on probation. Other than that, it's been all VT since Moseley took over. Since 1953, Tech is 34-17-1 against UVA, including a 1-5 stretch from 1987 through 1992.

The Hoos won three games in a row from 1987-89. That's their only 3-game winning streak in the rivalry in the last 55 years, since they won six in a row from 1947-52.

Virginia has gone on three big winning streaks in this rivalry.

Virginia had huge recruiting advantages over the Hokies from 1987-92 because of VT's probation, and they also had a big advantage after World War II because returning war veterans didn't want to go to military school.

Except for those three big UVA streaks, the Hoos are just 16-45-4 against Tech. When the Hokies have had an even footing in recruiting with Virginia, they have been very successful.

It's a bit surprising that UVA didn't win more games against the Hokies when they had the advantage of ACC membership. However, from 1953 through 2003, with the Hoos in the ACC and the Hokies either in the Southern Conference, independent or the Big East, Tech held a 30-17-1 advantage.

Tomorrow will write another chapter in the Tech-UVA rivalry, and the Hoos have their best chance of beating the Hokies since their victory in 2003. However, UVA hasn't scored more than 10 points in Lane Stadium since 2000. If Virginia doesn't win on Saturday, the Hokies will have won nine of the last 10 games, and the rivalry will continue to get even more one-sided.
