Balance Equals Success
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

For the third straight year, the debate continues. What should Virginia Tech do to try and improve their offense? Should any changes be made at all? Does Tech focus on defense too much, and should they try and be more balanced? In this week's TSLMail, we'll compare Tech's offensive and defensive ranking with eight of the nation's top programs.

When deciding which programs to include, I chose the last four National Title winners, plus four other top-notch teams. That includes Oklahoma, who is playing for the championship this year.

First of all, let's bite the bullet and look at the offensive rankings. These numbers are the average of each team's total offense ranking over the past five seasons, 2004-08.

Average Offensive Ranking
Team Ranking

Texas

10.8

USC

15.4

Florida

26.8

Oklahoma

28.2

LSU

37.8

Penn State

52

Georgia

53

Ohio State

59.2

Virginia Tech

85.6

Ouch. Not only are the Hokies in last place amongst this group, but it's not even close. Ohio State is the second worst offensive team of this group, and they still are over 25 spots ahead of Tech on average.

However, the table dispels the myth that many of the nation's top programs have a top 10 offense and a top 10 defense. Many Tech fans have the perception that if the Hokies had a top 10 offense to go along with their top 10 defense, the program would be unstoppable. As you can see, not even USC has averaged a Top 10 offense over the past five seasons.

Now, let's move on to defenses.

Average Defensive Ranking
Team Ranking

Virginia Tech

3.4

LSU

9.6

Penn State

10.6

Ohio State

11.2

Georgia

15.2

USC

16.4

Florida

21.4

Oklahoma

26.6

Texas

31.4

LSU finished third in the nation in total defense for four straight years, but in 2008 they only rank 36th. Meanwhile, Tech has been ranked in the top five in total defense for four of the five years, and so far this year rank 7th. The Hokies are the only team on this list to finish in the top 10 in total defense for five straight years. As expected, The Big 12 schools are the worst defensive teams on the list.

The next table contains information on the ranking differential between offense and defense for each school.

Offense/Defense Differential
Team Offense
Rank
Defense
Rank
Differential Advantage National
Title?

USC

15.4 16.4 1 Offense Yes

Oklahoma

28.2 26.6 1.6 Defense No

Florida

26.8 21.4 5.4 Defense Yes

Texas

10.8 31.4 20.6 Offense Yes

LSU

37.8 9.6 28.2 Defense Yes

Georgia

53 15.2 37.8 Defense No

Penn State

52 10.6 41.4 Defense No

Ohio State

59.2 11.2 48 Defense No

VT

85.6 3.4 82.2 Defense No

Virginia Tech is no different from most of these other top schools, in that the defensive rankings are higher than the offensive rankings. Only USC and Texas have, on average, a higher ranked offense than defense. And for the Trojans, it's very close.

However, you'll also notice that Virginia Tech is the least balanced school on this list. Georgia, Penn State, Ohio State and Virginia Tech have the four most unbalanced ranking differentials over the past five years. What do they have in common? They haven't won a National Championship in that span.

Meanwhile, four of the five most balanced teams on the list have won a National Championship in the last five years. If Oklahoma beats Florida on January 8, all five of the most balanced teams will have a National Championship in the past five seasons.

It might seem silly to be talking Virginia Tech and National Championship in the same article. However, it was the Tech administration who put the empty trophy case in the Merryman Center, thereby setting the expectations of the Hokie fanbase. The table above clearly illustrates that it takes balance to win a National Championship.

One of the reasons bowl travel is down and excitement over the ACC Championship is at a dull roar is because Tech fans don't see Frank Beamer taking the steps improve his offense and make his team more balanced. It was Beamer and the football program who set the expectations by installing the empty trophy case, and it's only natural that fans are upset when they don't think the Hokies are doing all they can to achieve that goal.

And if the offensive and defense statistics don't get more balanced, that goal will probably never be reached.

December 12, 2008
Coming off yet another tough loss, the Hokies will be back in Cassell Coliseum on Sunday to take on the Longwood Lancers. Longwood is a second year Division I program who on paper will not give Tech any trouble. However, they are probably more advanced for a second year program than anyone could reasonably expect.

More Practice, More Focus: Hokies Prepare for the Orange Bowl
December 11, 2008
Following the Orange Bowl loss to Kansas, the hot topic of debate was whether or not the Hokies prepared for the game as much as they should have during the month of December. The obvious answer was "no". This year, Tech seems to be taking the bowl game more seriously than a year ago, and everyone is hoping it results in a different outcome.

ACC Championship Game Analysis: Gameplan Works to Perfection
December 10, 2008
The Hokies sure picked the right time to play their most complete game of the year. A young inexperienced group of players had worked all season to get better, but they had not put it all together in any one game. It happened on Saturday. Easily playing their best football of the season, the Hokies rocked Boston College with a couple of left hooks and a right cross to pull away to a 30-12 victory and their second consecutive ACC Championship. The Hokies will return to the Orange Bowl with a lot of confidence, a different attitude and the opportunity to register 10 wins for the fifth season in a row.

Mom's Last Season
December 8, 2008
For reasons that I have kept private up until now, the 2008 Hokie football season has been a tough one for me, and last Saturday was the toughest. On Wednesday, December 3rd, my mother passed away at 6:30 in the morning, after a five-month battle with cancer. At 2:00 pm on Saturday, right about the time the Hokies took their 14-0 lead on Boston College in the ACC Championship Game, her funeral began. It's been tough to care about football this season, especially last Saturday.

Hopper, Seventy-First Headed to State Final

Virginia Tech recruit James Hopper jump started Seventy-First High School's (Fayetteville, N.C.) run to the Class 4A state championship game, scoring the only two scores in a 14-0 regional quarterfinal win over #1 seed Mount Tabor High School. The 5-10, 180-pound senior defensive back/running back got the job done on both sides of the ball in the win, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first half and returning an interception 80 yards for the game's only second half score.
