A Weekend of ACC Basketball
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

All 12 ACC teams are in action this weekend, with three games played on Saturday and another three on Sunday. This week we'll take a quick look at each game, possible results, and what each result could mean for the teams and the ACC standings.

NC State at Georgia Tech, Saturday, 1:30pm, Raycom

NC State at Georgia Tech is the first game of the weekend, and it probably means less than any other game of the weekend. Georgia Tech is 1-9 in conference play, putting them half-a-game behind Virginia in the standings. In other words, they are in dead last. NC State is 3-6, and though an NCAA tournament bid isn't forthcoming, they still have a good shot at the NIT.

This is really the only game of the weekend that means nothing. No one will notice if Georgia Tech loses, though an NC State loss could harm the Wolfpack's chances at making the NIT.

Florida State at Wake Forest, Saturday, 4pm, Raycom

This is a big game that features two teams ranked in the Top 25. Wake Forest is in the middle of a slide. The Demon Deacons have lost three of their last four games, including an 82-76 defeat at the hands of NC State this past week. Wake doesn't want these losses to start snowballing as we get into the stretch run of the season. They need to hold serve at home, and they'd also like a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament. If they lose to FSU and drop to 5-5 in league play, things won't look good for that bye.

Florida State was picked to finish 10th in the ACC this year. As it stands, the 'Noles are 6-3 in the conference and tied for third place. They are one of the best defensive teams in the league, and All-ACC guard Toney Douglas can play for anyone. If FSU can go on the road and beat a team like Wake, it could do quite a bit for their image in the eyes of the NCAA tournament committee.

Also, the winner of this game will have an easier road to a bye in the opening round of the ACC tournament. This is probably the biggest league game of the weekend.

Virginia Tech at Maryland, Saturday, 4pm, Raycom

This is another big one. Maryland isn't quite out of the NCAA tournament picture, but a home loss to Virginia Tech would basically put them in that situation. The Terps play Clemson, UNC and Duke in their three games following their contest with the Hokies. If Maryland doesn't beat Tech at home, their NCAA tournament chances will become miniscule.

It's not a must-win game for Virginia Tech, but it would be very big if the Hokies could go on the road and pull this one off. Maryland isn't a Top 50 team, but it would give Tech another road ACC win. The NCAA tournament committee also looks at the road/neutral records of each team under consideration, and the Hokies could help their chances by showing they can win consistently outside Cassell Coliseum. Tech would also stay in the running for a bye in the ACC tournament with a win at Maryland.

Clemson at Virginia, Sunday, 1pm, Raycom

This isn't a big game for Virginia. With a 7-13 overall record and a 1-8 mark in ACC play, they are not going to play in the postseason. The only thing they can do at this point is spoil the season for other teams, and that's what they'll try to do against Clemson.

For the Tigers, a win over Virginia won't help them. However, a loss could hurt them quite a bit. They are still fighting for a very high seed in the ACC Tournament, perhaps even the #1 seed. Clemson also is looking to be at least a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament, and a loss to a bad team at this point in the season could damage those hopes.

Duke at Boston College, Sunday, 5:30pm, FSN

Both of these teams are reeling right now. Duke is coming off a loss to UNC at home, and that came just a week after getting shellacked by Clemson on the road. The Blue Devils aren't playing good basketball right now, and if they want to stay in contention for the top spot in the ACC, they need to win this game on Sunday.

Boston College was picked to finish 11th in the ACC standings this year, but they've already won six league games. However, they have lost their last two games to Wake Forest and Clemson. Their RPI could be higher, and they don't want to start a late-season slide.

This is a big game for both teams. For Duke, it could impact their seeding. For the Eagles, it could be the difference between the NCAA tournament or the NIT.

UNC at Miami, Sunday, 7:45pm, FSN

After starting out 0-2 in conference play, UNC is now 8-2. They easily beat Duke on the road on Wednesday night, and now travel to south Florida for a matchup with Miami. The Tar Heels want to stay ahead of Duke and Clemson in the ACC standings. They hold the tiebreaker over each team at this point in the season.

Miami is 4-6 in the ACC, and three of their last five games are on the road, following the UNC game. They are squarely on the bubble, but a win over a Top 5 team like UNC could enhance their chances for the Big Dance quite a bit.

Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech at Maryland
February 13, 2009
All games in the ACC are big (that's one of the reasons we love this conference), and the Hokies will get yet another test on Saturday from the Maryland Terrapins. The Terps look like an NIT team right now, but they still have an outside shot at making a run and earning an NCAA tournament berth. They'll be gunning for Virginia Tech with everything they have.

Football schedules for the 2009 season were released for all 12 ACC schools on Thursday, and it's never too early to look ahead. Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
February 11, 2009
Virginia Tech takes on a struggling Georgia Tech team on Wednesday night in Blacksburg, and the Hokies need to win it. They can not afford a home loss to a team ranked outside the Top 100 of the RPI. A win will also put Tech in a tie in the loss column for second place in the ACC, as either Duke or UNC will lose their third conference game of the year tonight.

Hosley Discusses Decision; VT Offers Jr. WR
February 10, 2009
By all accounts, Atlantic Community (Delray Beach, FL) cornerback Jayron Hosley was all set to sign with the University of South Florida last Wednesday. Hosley-to-USF was the conventional wisdom, but that was before the 5-10, 172-pound senior made an official visit to Virginia Tech on the weekend of January 30th-February 1st. The Florida Class 5A first-team all-state selection kept quiet about his decision until the morning of Signing Day, when he announced he would sign with Virginia Tech.
