20-Win Seasons Rare for the Hokies
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com
Virginia Tech will take on the Baylor Bears on Saturday morning, and a win
will give the Hokies their 20th victory of the season. That's only happened 15
times in 100 seasons of basketball at Virginia Tech, so it's not something to
take lightly.
The
Hokies won 20 games or more for five straight seasons in the 1980s, but the
program fell on hard times shortly thereafter. Bill Foster briefly brought the
program back in the mid-90s, and now Seth Greenberg is going for his third
straight 20-win season.

Charlie Moir was at the helm during the golden age of Tech basketball in the
1980s, but after he left the program fell off. Tech has had just four 20-win
seasons since, twice under Bill Foster and twice under Seth Greenberg. Of
course, there were just four 20-win seasons in program history before Charlie
Moir arrived.
Overall, Moir had seven 20-win teams at Virginia Tech, while three other
coaches have had two 20-win teams.

Obviously Moir is the most famous of Tech's basketball coaches, with 213
total wins in Blacksburg. That is almost twice as many as Chuck Noe, who is in
second place with 109 career wins. However, Moir's 213 wins and seven 20-win
seasons are tainted by the fact that the Hokies were slapped with 12 NCAA
violations in 1987 and put on probation. Moir was cleared of any wrongdoing, but
the probation hurt the program, and Moir himself left following the 1986-87
season.
With a victory over Baylor tomorrow, Seth Greenberg will have his third
straight 20-win season, putting him all alone in second place behind Moir in
career 20-win seasons. It would also be just the second time in school history
that Tech has been able to win 20 games in a season for three consecutive years.
Greenberg
already has one accomplishment this year that hasn't been done since the Moir
era. For just the second time in school history, the Hokies are playing in the
postseason for the third straight year. The Hokies were in the NCAA tournament
in 2007 and the NIT each of the last two years.
Tech went to postseason play for five straight seasons from 1982 through
1986. That included NIT appearances in 1982, 1983 and 1984, while the 1985 and
1986 squads made the NCAA tournament.
So while it's easy to be disappointed that Virginia Tech didn't make the NCAA
tournament this year, it's important to remember that the program is still in
its growing stages. They are in the postseason for the third straight year for
just the second time in school history, and they can win 20 games in a season
for the third straight year for just the second time. Those are steps in the
right direction.

Spring Practice Preview: Offensive Line
March 20, 2009
Virginia
Tech will have a talented, experienced quarterback under center in 2009,
and they will have a number of good players at the skill positions. They
shouldn't have much trouble making plays offensively this year. However,
whether or not they can move the ball consistently will come down to the
performance of the offensive line, which always seems to be a question
mark.

One of Five Offers for Ricardo Young

H.D.
Woodson (Washington, D.C.) rising senior signal caller Ricardo Young
has a pretty impressive ratio going on the recruiting trail. He has mailed
his junior video to five schools and each of the five has responded with
an official offer. The 6-1, 170-pound prospect certainly hopes for similar
results as the recruiting process heads into spring.

Hokies,
Dukes Play One to Remember
March 19, 2009
How's
this for foreshadowing: earlier this week, in researching some bit of
trivia that I now no longer recall, I got sidetracked and wound up reading
the Hokie Huddler's account of Virginia Tech's epic 141-133 double
overtime win over Southern Mississippi on February 6th, 1988. Little did I
know that a few days after I relived that classic, the Hokies would stage
another double overtime thriller, downing Duquesne 116-108 in the opening
round of the 2009 NIT.

March 16, 2009
Erick
Green's first and only season with Paul VI (Fairfax, VA) turned out to
be a big success, both individually and team-wise. With the 6-2, 190-pound
Green running the point, head coach Glenn Farello's squad (19-15 overall)
captured its first ever VIS state championship. Green, who spent the first
three years of his high school career at Millbrook High School, earned
state tournament MVP honors.
