Quarterbacks Generally Struggle in Spring Game by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com Spring Games at Virginia Tech should not be used to make strong judgments about the team, or about individual players. The starters are split amongst both teams, many players miss the game with injuries, and it is afterall just a scrimmage. Just take a look at the quarterbacking numbers from the Spring Game, going back to the days of Michael Vick.
Some of those numbers are downright ugly. If you saw Michael Vick play in that 1999 Spring Game, you might have left the stadium thinking that there was no way he could beat out r-junior Dave Meyer for the starting job. In fact, Vick's combined numbers for his two spring games don't look like those of the #1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. Moving forward to the 2001 Spring Game, Grant Noel had a terrible completion percentage and averaged barely three yards per completion. He did have a touchdown pass, but overall he didn't play as well in the Spring Game as he did in most real games in the upcoming season. Bryan Randall's first spring game came in 2002. Because of Grant Noel's torn ACL, Randall played every snap at quarterback for both teams, and without a yellow no-contact jersey. He went on to have one of the better performances in a Spring Game by a Tech quarterback in recent memory. Marcus Vick was a First Team All-ACC quarterback in 2005, but he didn't get off to an auspicious start in the 2005 spring game. He completely barely 50% of his passes, and he threw an interception to forgotten (and eventually dismissed) cornerback Theo Miller. In the last two games, Sean Glennon has been Tech's primary passer. He didn't get many throws in 2006, but he had arguably the Hokies' best Spring Game performance from a quarterback in the last 10 years last spring. Glennon threw two touchdown passes, one to Brandon Dillard and another to Ike Whitaker. Tyrod Taylor was 11-of-19 for 67 yards, with an interception. Tomorrow, Tyrod Taylor will square off against Ju-Ju Clayton in the annual Maroon-White game. Judging from history, neither player will have a great game statistically. However, don't let that change your judgment of either player's ability. TSL Spring Game Tailgate Information OK, Hokie Sports Fans...time once again for the VT Spring Game. The team has been busy throughout the winter in the weight room, has endured the dreaded 6 AM workouts, and is busy sharpening their skills in Spring practice. It is just about time for the annual Maroon and White Spring Game. The least we can do, as fans, is come out and cheer them on, and what better way to get in a cheering mood than to do a little tailgating! The 2009 Edition of the Award Winning TSL Spring Game Tailgate Party. Your hosts this year will be Pops & Co., knucklejunction, hokiebred, HFNVA and F4EHokie. Russian Hokie will be our official photographer. Here's what will be provided:
Here's what you need to bring:
We will be cooking about 125# of pork, and it will be first come, first served. Tailgating begins at 10:00 AM. Look for the white tents and the Hokie flag in the east end of lot 2. This year, since we don't have a sponsor as in the past, we need folks to step up and help us out with the costs. There will be a donation jar at the tailgate. Please chip in and help us pay our expenses! We're looking forward to it, and hope you are as well!!!
