Lots of Action this June for Tech Sports by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com It has been an exciting month of June for Virginia Tech sports, in case you haven't been keeping up. The men's soccer coach resigned and a replacement was hired, Seth Greenberg hired a new assistant to replace the departed Stacey Palmore, and two Hokies were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Virginia Tech men's soccer coach Oliver Weiss resigned effective June 2, 2009. In seven years at Tech, Weiss helped propel the men's soccer program to new heights. He posted an overall record of 72 wins, 52 losses and 7 ties. In 2007, Weiss led the Hokies to the College Cup, the soccer equivalent of the Final Four, before falling in the national semifinals to Wake Forest. Weiss has been replaced by his top assistant, Mike Brizendine. Brizendine is a native of Virginia. He played at James Madison from 1995 through 1998. He played professionally for the Roanoke Wrath and the Northern Virginia Royals. Brizendine began his coaching career as an assistant at Bridgewater in 2000 before taking over as the head coach in 2001. His 2002 and 2003 teams posted a combined record of 23-13, and he was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. On the basketball front, head coach Seth Greenberg has hired Bill Courtney to take over the spot on the staff vacated by Stacey Palmore, who accepted at job at Georgia. Courtney was an assistant to Dave Leitao at Virginia last season. He accepted a job at Virginia Commonwealth in April, but left VCU to take the opening at Virginia Tech. Besides UVA, Courtney has previous coaching experience at George Mason, Providence, Bowling Greene and American. He spent eight years as Jim Larranaga's associate head coach at George Mason, helping turn the Patriots into one of the top programs in the CAA. With so much time spent in the mid-Atlantic region, Courtney has many recruiting ties in the area. The Hokies also had some baseball news this week. Two Tech players were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft. Outfielder Steve Bumbry was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th round. Bumbry's father, Al Bumbry, played center field for the Orioles for 14 seasons. Al Bumbry was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1973 and an All-Star in 1980. Steve Bumbry just completed his junior year of eligibility. He hit .283 this past season, with a team-high 10 homeruns. Imposing 6-6, 244-lbs Rhett Ballard was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 26th round. Ballard finished the season with 7-4 record and a 4.05 ERA. He had 263 career strikeouts at Virginia Tech, good for fourth on the school's all-time list. One of Virginia Tech's baseball signees was also drafted. Joe Mantiply, a 6-5 left-handed pitcher out of Tunstall High School in Danville Virginia, was selected by the New York Mets in the 48th round of the 50 round draft.
