Busy Month Ahead for Hokies
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

It's July, and we're a little more a month away from preseason football practice.  However, that doesn't mean that Virginia Tech won't be busy with football related activities in the month of July.

Besides the normal training for the upcoming season, there will be a lot of activities taking place on campus this month.  The first occurs this coming Tuesday, when many incoming freshmen will enroll for the second summer session.

Telvion Clark, D.J. Coles, J.R. Collins, Tariq Edwards, Antone Exum, James Gayle, James Hopper, Jayron Hosley, Cody Journell, Andrew Miller, Nubian Peak, Duan Perez-Means, Logan Thomas, David Wang, Jerrodd Williams, David Wilson and Tyrel Wilson are the scholarship freshmen who will enrolling at Tech on Tuesday.

Friday, July 10 will also be a big night for several members of the 2009 recruiting class.  Antone Exum, James Gayle, Cody Journell, Andrew Miller, Duan Perez-Means, Logan Thomas and Tyrel Wilson will play in the VHSCA All-Star football game.  The game will be held in Darling Stadium in Hampton at 7pm.

While many members of the 2009 class will be enrolling, the Tech coaches will be focused on the 2010 recruiting class.  The Hokies will hold the second of their two summer recruiting camps on Saturday, July 11.  As Will Stewart noted in his article earlier in the week, these camps are very important for Tech's recruiting efforts.

The Hokies already have 11 committments for the 2010 class, including two quarterbacks, four defensive linemen and three offensive linemen.  Tech is clearly focusing on the trenches and the quarterback position in this class.  They will try to fill out their class by adding committments from quality prospects and defensive back and linebacker.

Recruiting is important, but it only tides us over for football season itself.  ACC Media Football Kickoff will be held in Greensboro, NC from July 26 through July 28.  The media from the ACC region will convene and interview coaches and players, vote on their All-ACC teams, and determine their preseason picks for who will win the conference.  Virginia Tech is expected to be the top selection.

Shortly thereafter, the entire Virginia Tech football team will report back to Blacksburg to open preseason practice.  All players must be back on campus by August 5, and practice will begin on August 6.  The Hokies will have 22 preseason practices, including three full scrimmages, before opening their normal gameweek practice for Alabama on August 31.

Tech will travel to Atlanta on Friday, September 4, and then they'll take on the Crimson Tide on Saturday, September 5.

It's going to be a busy summer, but TechSideline.com will be right here to provide preseason position previews for the Hokies, as well as previews of all the other ACC teams.
