E.L. Smiling and Chase Williams Commit to Virginia Tech by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com The Hokies received their 16th and 17th commitments of the 2010 recruiting class this week. Bud Foster was the lead recruiter for Brooke Point wide receiver E.L. Smiling and Loudoun County linebacker Chase Williams, and they both committed to the Hokies within two days of each other. Smiling plays for Brooke Point High School in Stafford, VA, which has sent defensive ends Isaiah Hamlette and Lanford Collins to Virginia Tech over the past two years. He caught 24 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns as a junior during the 2008 season. Smiling is 6-4, 185, and he was clocked at a 4.6 in the 40 yard dash at Virginia Tech's most recent football camp. "E.L. has unbelievable upside," Brooke Point head coach Jeff Berry said. "He's an unbelievable player right now. He's going to be a game changer for us, but at the same time he's not anywhere near his potential." Chase Williams is a 6-3, 240-lbs linebacker prospect from Loudoun County High School. He made 166 tackles and 33 tackles for loss during the 2008 season. He is expected to play the mike linebacker position at Virginia Tech. Williams chose the Hokies over offers from Miami and West Virginia. Williams is the son of Gregg Williams, the former defensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins, and current defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. He is a very instinctive football player, and he's ranked the #10 inside linebacker prospect in the country by Rivals.com. He is ranked the #13 player in the state of Virginia by TechSideline.com. "He's obviously very excited and relieved that the process is over," Loudoun County head coach Todd Hill said. "He feels there is a great opportunity at Tech for him to be successful. He feels very comfortable with Coach Beamer and Coach Foster." Hokies Don't Have a Great Record in Domes and on Turf We are just 43 days and change from Virginia Tech's meeting with Alabama in the Georgia Dome. The Hokies will be playing inside a dome on artificial turf, a setting in which they don't have a great record.
But is that record due to the fact that the Hokies are playing indoors, or that they are playing on artificial turf? Here is a look at Tech's games on artificial turf since joining the ACC.
