BC:
The Virginia Tech of the North
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com,
TSLMail #402, October 9, 2009
Virginia Tech and Boston
College are very similar, not only in philosophy and style of play, but also in
the numbers game.

There are a lot of similarities in that table. Both teams have not had a losing
record this decade, and both teams have been to a bowl every year this decade
(Tech's streak goes back to 1993, while BC's goes back to 1999). The Eagles have
actually won more bowl games than the Hokies in that span. In head to head
meetings, Tech has won six of 10 times.
The only major difference
between the two programs is the number of conference championships. The Hokies
won three Big East titles, and they've won three more in the ACC. BC hasn't won
a conference championship, though they did advance to the ACC Championship Game
twice. Six conference championships to none...that's a pretty big difference.
But on the whole, the
programs are similar. They are both coached by defensive minded guys who value
toughness, discipline, physical play in the trenches, field position, etc. You
know the deal by now, and you don't need me to tell you again.
So why does BC always fall
just short of being conference champions? While they've always been very well
coached, they also have lacked the talent that a team needs to win their
conference. There just aren't as many good players to recruit in Massachusetts,
Rhode Island and Vermont as there are in Virginia and North Carolina.
Open
House This Saturday at Kent Square Condominiums, 9 AM to 11 AM!
Because of their
geographic location, BC will always be capped. However, they can still be very
competitive if they stick with their conventional blue collar mentality. That's
how they win games, and I think Frank Spaziani is the right man to continue that
trend.
Injuries Plaguing Boston
College
BC has a number of players
who are banged up heading into this weekend's game at Virginia Tech.

Okoroha is BC's top backup at free safety, and he also plays a role on special
teams. He has played in four games this year, making four total tackles. He will
miss the Tech game, and his loss creates depth issues in the secondary.
Tight end Jordan McMichael
has also been ruled out for this weekend's game. He has four catches for 65
yards and a touchdown on the season, including a 50 yard touchdown against Wake
Forest. He is a valuable part of the BC passing game.
A couple of defensive
players are listed as doubtful. Austin Giles is a starting defensive tackle who
is suffering from a back injury. He has played in every game this season, making
2.5 tackles for loss. If Giles can't play, BC will be thin up front. Will
Thompson was supposed to start at weakside linebacker this year, but a shoulder
injury has kept him out of the first five games. He is doubtful to return this
week.
Fullback James McCluskey
has also missed the first five games of the season with an Achilles injury, but
it's possible that he could return this week. BC has been using more H-back
looks with McCluskey out of the lineup.
Finally, Roderick Rollins,
Alex Albright and Damik Scafe are all listed as probable. They are all starters
on the defensive side of the ball. They will likely play against Virginia Tech,
but they are obviously banged up.
Pay special attention to
how many injuries Boston College has on the defensive side of the ball,
particularly the defensive line. Alex Albright and Damik Scafe will probably
play, but they aren't 100%. Austin Giles is listed as doubtful at this point.
That's 75% of BC's starting defensive line that is going through some type of
injury. You can bet that Virginia Tech will try to get the running game going on
Saturday.

Keys
to the Game and Matchups to Watch: Boston College
October 9, 2009
In
one of the fastest rising rivalries in college football, the
Virginia Tech Hokies will host the Boston College Eagles for
homecoming this Saturday in a critical ACC match-up. The Hokies and
Eagles will meet for the fifth time in the last 28 games, so
obviously both teams know each other extremely well. However,
attrition, injuries, and illness have given both teams a different
look this year. Will the Eagles be able to extend their three-game
regular season winning streak over Tech, or will the Hokies continue
their momentum from winning a second straight ACC championship over
BC?

Class: Thourogood Guides Ocean Lakes
October 8, 2009
The
2008 season was Lafonte Thourogood's first as starting
quarterback for Ocean Lakes High School's (Virginia Beach, VA)
varsity football squad. Just a sophomore, the 6-2 prospect did well
at signal caller, helping the Dolphins to an undefeated regular
season and an appearance in the Division 6 Eastern Region
championship game. Last years experience propelled Thourogood,
who worked hard this offseason and now feels and plays like
a more confident quarterback.

Owe BC a Beatdown
October 8, 2009
Virginia
Tech's two straight ACC Championship Game victories over Boston
College have helped dull the pain of three straight regular season
losses to the Eagles, but the fact remains: from 2006-2008, BC has
laid some painful, at times embarrassing, defeats on the Hokies.
Boston College: They're the New Pitt.

Checking
in with Recruit Detrick Bonner
October 7, 2009
Accompanied
by a handful of family members, Luella (Locust Grove, GA) cornerback
prospect Detrick Bonner was in Blacksburg last month for
Virginia Techs big win over Miami. Just like fellow Hokie recruit
Mark Leal, who was in Blacksburg that weekend on an official visit,
Bonner had never been to a game at Virginia Tech before.

Josh
Furman to Make Official Visit This Weekend
October 6, 2009
Virginia
Tech will be the second official visit Old Mill (Millersville, MD)
star senior Josh Furman makes, and hes going to make it
this weekend. The 6-2, 195-pound running back/defensive back visited
Virginia Tech earlier this year, so what will he be looking for the
second time around?

Game Analysis: Big Plays Tell the Story on Both Sides

off a thumping of the swagger-staggered Miami Hurricanes, the Hokies
hit the road for the first time all season to face Duke. A letdown
was inevitable ... it was only a question of how big it would be.

Thoughts: Duke
October 5, 2009
It's
Monday, and parts of Hokie Nation are filled with angst over a
less-than-stellar performance against Duke. Not me. There are areas
of concern on VT's team (what's up with that defense?), but
Saturday's game featured a dominating performance by Tech's
quarterback and wide receivers, a welcome sight. The college
football landscape is littered with broken dreams already (hello,
Houston), and the Hokies did the most important thing: they won.

Around
the ACC: October 5, 2009
October 5, 2009
After
another week of ACC football, there are just three teams with no
conference losses. Virginia Tech is one, and Maryland and Virginia
are the others. It's no surprise that the Hokies are at the top, but
the Terps and Cavs looked like the worst teams in the conference in
the month of September. The ACC also picked up a huge non-conference
win on Saturday night, with Miami knocking off Oklahoma.

Pursuing Star GW-Danville Forward
October 5, 2009
Virginia
Tech is one of a handful of major Division 1 programs to offer
George Washington (Danville, VA) junior forward C.J. Barksdale,
who made several unofficial visits to Blacksburg last month. The
6-7, 225-pound prospect is in no rush to make a decision, though, as
he prepares for what he hopes will be a big 2009/2010 season.

Virginia
Tech's women's soccer team beat top-ranked UNC Sunday, 1-0 behind a
goal by Marika Gray. The win is Tech's first ever over the Tar
Heels, the most decorated team in women's soccer, and is just the
34th defeat in 31 years of UNC women's soccer.
