Taylor Near the Top in Pass Efficiency by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com, TSLMail #455, October 22, 2010 Tyrod Taylor is putting up big numbers in 2010, and so far he's the top early candidate for ACC Player of the Year. His pass efficiency rating is among the best in the country, and he could finish as high as second in that category of all VT quarterbacks of the Beamer Bowl Era.
Taylor's 2009 pass efficiency rating did rank third on the list, but Taylor's performance in 2010 has bumped it down to fourth. It has also knocked Maurice DeShazo's 1993 season down to third, though the numbers remain very close. What's interesting is that Tyrod Taylor occupies two of the top four spots on the list, but his 2008 season also ranks dead last by a wide margin. Taylor's 103.3 rating trails Jim Druckenmiller's 1995 season by over 17 points. Taylor, as well as senior quarterback Sean Glennon, struggled in 2008 thanks mainly to a group of wide receivers who were all freshmen. Taylor is one of just two ACC quarterbacks who rank in the top 50 nationally in quarterback efficiency. The other is UNC signal caller T.J. Yates, who everyone wrote off heading into this season.
No one is even approaching Taylor and Yates. Russell Wilson throws for a lot of yards, but he's also thrown nine interceptions this year. Jacory Harris, Sean Rendree and Christian Ponder have also struggled with turnovers. It looks like the ACC quarterback efficiency race will come down to Taylor and Yates, which is not something that most people would have predicted before the season began. There are other interesting things to note. Jim Druckenmiller was remembered for a 1995 season in which he led the big comeback against UVA and beat Texas in the Sugar Bowl. In reality, his 1995 season wasn't particularly good. He only completed 51.7% of his passes and threw 14 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. In fact, he threw three interceptions in that UVA game before leading the comeback. Druckenmiller's senior season in 1996 was much better. He threw for over 2,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions. As a result of that season, as well as his physical ability, he went on to be a first round draft pick. Michael Vick had a huge freshman season with a 179.2 rating (that counts the bowl game). He hit Andre Davis on numberous deep balls, and he threw for 184 yards per game despite completing just 90 passes on the season. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting that year. His sophomore season wasn't nearly as successful, statistically. He only averaged 123.4 yards per game through the air and threw just eight touchdown passes. His quarterback rating dropped all the way to 127.4.
