Many Tech fans are worried about the inexperience of quarterback Logan Thomas heading into the 2011 season. That doesn't make them any different than most of the rest of the ACC's fanbases. Only five starting quarterbacks return from 2010, and right now seven sophomores are projected to be starters.

Of the five returning starters, three are sophomores. Chase Rettig and Tanner Price started as true freshmen last season, and they both play for teams who likely will not be able to beat the Hokies.

Sean Renfree has the tools to be a good quarterback, but he plays for Duke, so it doesn't really matter how good he is. Danny O'Brien plays for Maryland, and unless the Terps reach the ACC Championship Game, the Hokies won't have to worry about him. The biggest name on that list is rising senior Jacory Harris, who is locked in a tight battle with true sophomore Stephen Morris for the starting position.

Right now Harris and Morris are tied atop the depth chart. It's likely that Harris will win the job, but if he doesn't, that means the ACC will have zero senior starters at quarterback, and eight sophomores. That doesn't bode well for a productive offensive season for ACC schools. It's important that the quarterback be productive, or the entire offense is likely to fail.

Of all those new starters, perhaps no one is set up to succeed more so than Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech's r-sophomore starter. Thomas has all the physical tools he needs to be successful, he just needs to put it all together on the field.

Thomas will have several built in advantages. First of all, he will be playing behind an offensive line that returns four starters, and should be deeper than it's ever been during the ACC era. Second, the Hokies should have a strong running game with David Wilson as the starter, and Josh Oglesby as the top backup. Third, Tech returns all of their wide receivers, and their experience will certainly help Thomas adjust.

Considering the other quarterbacks returning around the conference, and the number of experienced players returning around him, it would not at all be surprising to see Logan Thomas develop into one of the ACC's better signal callers in 2011.

The schedule also sets up well for Thomas. He gets to play against four below average defenses in the month of September. His first two major challenges, against Clemson and Miami, will come in the friendly confines of Lane Stadium. A 6-0 start is possible, and Thomas should be able to put up good numbers in September against Appalachian State, East Carolina, Arkansas State and Marshall.

Are those starters in the table set in stone? No, but those would likely be the 12 quarterbacks for the ACC schools if the season started tomorrow. However, a lot can change between now and September.
