Key Stretch Awaits Hokie Basketball
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com,

Virginia Tech has a
great opportunity ahead of them in basketball. Right now the Hokies are
11-3 on the season, and ranked in the top 40 of the RPI. They have three
very winnable games coming up, and the chance to move to 14-3 and into the
top 30 of the RPI is staring them right in the face.
So far this year, it
appears the ACC is probably a four-bid league when it comes to the NCAA
Tournament. The Hokies can't afford to lose games they shouldn't lose, and
thus far they've done a good job of avoiding that. Here's a look at their
next three games, which are all winnable.

In today's preview of the Wake Forest game, we noted that Virginia Tech is
better than the Demon Deacons in almost every statistical category,
including strength of schedule. That's a game the Hokies should win,
though everyone knows that upsets happen in basketball every day.
So far, Boston
College is the worst team in the ACC, and they are rivaling 2010-11 Wake
Forest as the worst team in ACC history. They have losses to Holy Cross,
UMass, Saint Louis, New Mexico, Penn State, Boston U, Providence, Harvard
and Rhode Island, and their computer numbers are as bad as it gets for a
power conference team. The Eagles are breaking in almost an entirely new
roster from last season, and they dont resemble the team that upset the
Hokies last season, just a game after Tech beat Duke.
The game between
Wake and Boston College, at home against Florida State, is interesting.
The Noles were expected to make the NCAA Tournament again this year, but
they are off to a very disappointing start, with losses to Harvard and
Princeton. FSU should probably get away from scheduling the Ivy League for
awhile.
That said, the Noles
are still a talented team. They have a lot of height, and they play good
defense, but they are offensively challenged. That makes them about the
same as every other Florida State team under Leonard Hamilton.
Here's a look at the
current ACC standings, based on RPI rank.

Virginia Tech has
played a good non-conference schedule, and as a result they have the third
best RPI of all the ACC schools. Right now, it's fair to say that Duke and
UNC are NCAA Tournament locks, while Virginia Tech, Virginia and NC State
are the next three in line.
Florida State and
Miami are not out of it, because they've played a tough enough schedule to
keep their RPI in the ballpark. However, they are going to have to go on
big winning streaks.
As far as Virginia
Tech goes, they've got a chance for a decent road win tomorrow, and then
they can beat a team who might end up in the top 50 in the following game.
Their objective when they go to Chestnut Hill next weekend is simply to
avoid what would be an embarrassing loss.

Sugar Bowl Reflections
January 6, 2012
Big-game
losses are hard to take, but some are harder to take than others.
Sometimes, the what-ifs will drive you crazy: the questionable
coaching decisions, the failure to make plays, the luck that went
against you, and the referees who made the calls that went against
you. When you lose by three points in overtime, the what-ifs are
legion, and they are what torture us well into the offseason.

Centreville
(Clifton, VA) defensive end Ken Ekanem, recently named
Virginia Preps AAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, is one of
the top uncommitted high school seniors in the state of Virginia.
Unless more schools jump into the picture in the coming weeks, the
6'3", 245-pound prospect's list has focused to three schools:
Notre Dame, Oregon and Virginia Tech.

A
Particularly Tough Loss
January 4, 2012
Virginia
Tech dominated Michigan on both sides of the ball on Tuesday night.
They had twice as many yards, 10 more first downs, and an advantage
of almost 14 minutes in time of possession. And they lost. I didn't
think it could get any worse than the Boise State game. I was wrong.

Rock-Bottom
Moment
January 4, 2012
This
wasn't just a bitter loss, it was an acidic loss, one that eats away
at the mind of any Hokie fan who thinks about it. There were many
twists and turns to this game, and one of the more critical moments
came midway through the fourth quarter, when Virginia Tech tried a
fake punt that was an epic, game-changing failure.

Hokies
Fall to Michigan in a Game Filled with Mistakes
January 4, 2012
The
Hokies did everything they were supposed to do. They showed up, they
played a good game, and they completely shut down Denard Robinson
and the Michigan offense. Unfortunately, they failed to win the
game. Robinson and the Wolverines won 23-20 in overtime.

The
Bright Side
January 3, 2012
Many
prognosticators are picking a Hokie loss tonight, and the consensus
-- though it's definitely not unanimous -- is that it's a close
match, but the Wolverines have a little bit too much for the Hokies.
Here at TSL, we picked Michigan to win by six points (Chris Coleman)
and three points (yours truly), while beat writers Andy Bitter and
Mark Giannotto both picked Michigan to win 27-24. Everyone has given
their reasons why Michigan could win, but in this article, I'll list
the factors that could lead the Hokies to victory.

From The Chesapeake Bowl
January 2, 2012
Five
Virginia Tech recruits, including four on the South (players from
DC, MD, VA, WV) and one on the North (players from DE, NJ, PA),
played in the 2011 Chesapeake Bowl, which took place in Edgewater
(MD) on December 30. The event was an opportunity for these players
to compete against a high level of competition, and also to get to
know each other before arriving in Blacksburg next fall.
