Spring Football 2003 Scrimmage #3 Recap April 5, 2003 by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com In the longest scrimmage yet this spring, an 87-play affair, QB Bryan Randall continued his strong spring, going 10-of-16 for 186 yards, 3 TDs, and no interceptions. The scrimmage was conducted as a series of special situations (goal-line offense, red-zone offense, midfield situations, etc.), and Randall threw TD passes of 7 yards to Chris Clifton, 41 yards to DeAngelo Hall, and 10 yards to Keith Willis. Freshman Marcus Vick was 8-of-17 for 80 yards, 2 TDs, and an interception. Vick threw a 9-yard TD pass to Jared Mazetta and a 4-yard fade route TD pass to Wilford. The interception was recorded by rover Michael Crawford. Tailback Kevin Jones had 25 yards on 4 carries to lead all tailbacks. Mike Imoh (7 carries, 14 yards) and Cedric Humes (6 carries, 15 yards, 2 TDs) also got a lot of work. Hall's 41-yard catch, in which he fought off Vince Fuller, tipped the ball to himself, and caught it, was the highlight of the day. Four receivers had three catches, led by Richard Johnson (3 catches, 57 yards). Keith Willis (3 catches, 52 yards, 1 TD), Ernest Wilford (3 catches, 29 yards, 1 TD), and Clifton (3 catches, 28 yards, 1 TD), also had three catches. Defensively, the Hokies had four sacks on the day. Rover James Griffin led in tackles with 7, and free safety Jimmy Williams had 6. In special teams play, the field goal kickers tried three long field goals with no success. Carter Warley (47 yards), Nic Schmitt (52 yards), and Brandon Pace (46 yards) all tried field goals and missed, with Schmitt's being blocked.
